Wellington, 5 March 2024 - A recent global survey conducted by Ipsos, in collaboration with the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College London, has unveiled varying perceptions of gender equality across 31 countries, including significant insights from New Zealand. This comprehensive poll, timed to coincide with International Women's Day, aims to understand global attitudes towards women's issues and how these perceptions differ by gender, generation, and geography.
Discrepancies in Perceptions of Safety and Access
In Hong Kong, a study by the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Federation of Women's Centres found that men significantly overestimate women's sense of safety and access to essential services like education and healthcare. Despite 90% of the city's respondents advocating for more opportunities for women, their perceived quality of life for women fell below the global average of 92%. These findings underscore the urgent need for policies that acknowledge and address the gender disparities in perception and reality, particularly in areas of safety, healthcare, and education.
Challenging Gender Equality among Younger Generations
The Ipsos survey revealed a concerning trend among younger generations, with 60% of Gen Z men believing that efforts towards women's equality inadvertently discriminate against men. This perception contrasts sharply with older generations, who are generally more supportive of gender equality initiatives. The data suggests a growing conservatism among Gen Z and Millennials regarding gender issues, highlighting the importance of continued education and dialogue to bridge these generational gaps in understanding and support for gender equality.
Global Consensus on Gender Equality
Despite these challenges, the survey indicates a broad global consensus on the importance of promoting gender equality. However, the path to achieving this goal is fraught with complex perceptions and attitudes that vary significantly across different demographics. By examining these diverse viewpoints, the Ipsos survey provides valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and activists seeking to promote gender equality and improve women's quality of life around the world.
As nations grapple with the findings of this extensive survey, it becomes clear that achieving gender equality requires a multifaceted approach. Addressing misconceptions, fostering intergenerational dialogue, and implementing targeted policies are critical steps towards creating a more equitable world for all genders. This study not only sheds light on the current state of gender equality globally but also emphasizes the ongoing need for action and awareness at every level of society.
