A level-five fire broke out at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po, claiming more than a hundred lives and injuring many more. In the face of such an abrupt and devastating tragedy, people may be experiencing grief, fear, confusion, anger, or helplessness, all of these reactions are completely normal.

This fire has brought profound trauma to the community. Our organisation extends our deepest condolences to all the victims, the families of the deceased and the firefighter who lost his life, and all affected residents. May the departed rest in peace.

Following the incident, we mobilised immediately to support those in need. Over the past week, we have:

  • Opened the Jockey Club Tai Wo Centre as a temporary shelter and childcare point
  • Assisted more than 800 affected households in applying for emergency relief funds, thanks for St. James Settlement’s support
  • Connected counselling psychologists from the Hong Kong Psychological Society to provide emotional support
  • Collaborated with Acts of Kindness and Ling Chuan to distribute emergency supplies

As a long-standing member of the Tai Po community, HKFWC has been committed to serving local residents since the establishment of our Jockey Club Tai Wo Centre in 1996. We currently serve over 4,600 members in Tai Po, including nearly 100 residents from fire-affected Wang Fuk Court and another 300 from the neighbouring Kwong Fuk Estate.

To strengthen support for those impacted by the Tai Po fire and to promote long-term community recovery, all proceeds from our 1206 Flag Day will be used to support people who affected by the Tai Po Fire and community recovery.

We sincerely call on the public to join us in extending a helping hand and standing with the affected residents during this difficult time. We are already planning post-disaster community recovery initiatives and hope to gain widespread support. For those unable to come to Hong Kong Island to support Flag Day in person, online donations are also welcome: https://forms.office.com/r/QgkwdjT6vf
