In celebration of International Women’s Day, we held a screening and sharing session of the carer documentary “Her Caring” on the evening of 6 March at the Jockey Club Carer Space (Fanling).
Through the real-life stories of four carers featured in the documentary, participants reflected on the realities of caring in our society. Although society has gradually become more open and has begun encouraging men to take on caring roles and share responsibilities within the family, the majority of caring duties still fall on women. Among the 16 participants that evening, three were men, reflecting that social perceptions of caring roles are gradually evolving.
During the post-screening sharing session, participants expressed that the film helped them more deeply understand the importance for carers to make use of community resources , not only to support the well-being of older persons, but also to ease their own caring pressures. At the same time, carers need to set boundaries within their caring roles. When they realise that the pressure of caring becomes overwhelming, they should prepare backup care arrangements early on, ensuring continued care for older persons through different means. This approach is healthier for both the carers and the elderly.
Participants also discussed how to achieve “caring without leaving employment”while fulfilling caring responsibilities. In addition to carers exploring their own personal development paths, society also needs to build a more carer-friendly community and workplace environment that understands the unique challenges carers face in balancing work and family responsibilities.
The caring journey and life development stories of two protagonists in the documentary were particularly inspiring to participants. Many shared that while caring for family members, one should not give up on personal growth and self-development, and should continue believing that it is possible to pursue one’s own path.
We provide a series of women-orientated service, including Counselling & Legal Support, Training & Employment Support, Gender Education, Caring the Carers, Cherish Food, Childcare & After-school Care, various Social Participation and Volunteer Development to promote gender equality in Hong Kong. We hope to enable women to develop their Confidence, Independence and Competence.
