Yee|Participant of the Carer Time Bank
As a carer of an elderly person, my days were always filled with caring responsibilities. Every day revolved around the needs of the older person I cared for. I was constantly busy, like a spinning top that could never stop, and freedom seemed like a luxury beyond my reach. What was even more emotionally draining was having to face occasional verbal attacks. Although the hurtful remarks might not have been intentional, they pierced my heart like needles, leaving me feeling helpless and exhausted. The caring journey is like a marathon. It tests not only your physical strength, but also your inner resilience. Despite all the difficulties, there have also been touching moments along the way that made me feel all my efforts were worthwhile.
I remember one occasion when the person I cared for quietly said to me, “Thank you.” I was taken aback. He rarely expressed his feelings, let alone said anything so warm. Those two simple words were like a ray of light, instantly lifting the exhaustion and hurt in my heart. I suddenly realised that, although this journey was difficult, my efforts had been recognised. That small expression of appreciation made everything feel worthwhile.
After joining the Carer Time Bank, I began participating in various activities. At first, I simply wanted to give them a try. Later, I discovered that I had regained my confidence and happiness there. Through the Carer Time Bank’s classes, I learned how to make handmade bags and experienced the joy of running a market stall. These activities helped me realise that I could have a stage of my own. I was not defined solely by my role as a carer. I was still myself, a person with unlimited possibilities.
One of my most memorable experiences was representing the Carer Time Bank at a community market, where I ran a stall offering facial massage services. At first, I felt nervous. I worried that my skills were not good enough and that no one would enjoy the service. However, when I began massaging my first customer’s face, she closed her eyes and smiled with satisfaction. She even praised my technique and said it was very professional.
More people then came to experience the service. Everyone who left the stall did so with a smile, and some even returned especially to tell me, “Your technique is really wonderful!” At that moment, I was filled with a sense of achievement. I no longer felt like the person who had been trapped by the daily responsibilities of caring. Instead, I had become someone capable of bringing happiness to others. I felt as though I was shining.
The most valuable lesson I have learned from the Carer Time Bank is to set aside some “me time” for myself. In the past, I always believed that carers should devote all their time and energy to others. The Carer Time Bank helped me understand that we must take good care of ourselves before we can care for others more effectively.
I have also made many new friends who are walking a similar path. We share our experiences and encourage one another, which has helped me feel less alone. Most importantly, through these activities and connections, I have rediscovered my passion for life and regained my confidence.
I sincerely hope that the Carer Time Bank will continue to develop. It has changed my life and can help many more carers like me discover their own light.
